Make a Wreath Out of Herbs for Gorgeous Fall Decor
When you decide to plant a garden, whether it takes up a large part of your backyard or sits on your windowsill, you look forward to all of the ways you will be able to enjoy the harvest. Fresh peppers can spice up a new salsa recipe, and native wildflowers bring in hummingbirds and other local wildlife. If you planted herbs like basil and thyme, then you were probably looking forward to all of the delicious dishes you would be able to enjoy.
You should benefit from your garden as much as possible because you invested so much time and money into making it successful. One unexpected way your herb garden can be put to use in your home is through your decor. A handcrafted wreath made from the herbs in your garden — or from a neighborhood market if you do not grow your own — can be woven into a beautiful wreath that greets guests at your front door. You can also hang it in your kitchen and use the herbs in your favorite recipes once they dry.
Do I Need Fresh or Dried Herbs?
The beauty of an herb wreath is that you can make it whatever you want it to be by choosing the herbs you love best. Fresh herbs let you enjoy the scent and greenery of your harvest when the herbs are at their peak. If you get herbs from a local source, like a neighbor or herb shop, they may only have dried herbs.
Dried herbs are just as beautiful and can be easily incorporated into your cooking. For the best of both worlds, consider making a wreath of fresh herbs and letting the herbs dry out while the wreath hangs.
Best Herbs for Your Wreath
Any herbs can be used to make a gorgeous wreath to decorate your home, depending on your preference. However, using herbs with a wood stem, like rosemary, helps ensure your wreath will dry easily and hold its shape because these herbs have a low moisture content. Herbs that fit well into a wreath include:
- Thyme
- Sage
- Lavender
- Rosemary
- Oregano
- Fennel blossoms
- Lemon balm
- Anise hyssop
Gathering Supplies
The right tools make a major difference when you are crafting your herb wreath if you want it to be simple and sturdy. Here’s what you need:
- Wreath form
- Twine to cover the metal form
- Rubber bands to create bundles of herbs
- Floral wire to attach herbs to the wreath
- Scissors or wire cutters
- Herbs of your choice
Making Your Own Wreath
Once you gather your supplies, the wreath can be completed with four simple steps:
- Wrap the wreath form in twine to hide the metal.
- Bundle six to 10 herb stems together using rubber bands or floral wire.
- Attach your bundles around the wreath form with floral wire, overlapping them to hide the form.
- Enjoy your new herb wreath!
A Tip From Flower Works
The wreath will look bright and full for several days until any fresh herbs, like oregano or fennel, begin to dry out and get smaller. To prevent this you can:
- Put a base layer of herbs, like rosemary or bay leaves, on the wreath form to fill it out.
- Add new herb bundles to the originals to keep your wreath looking full.
